Car Donation Scheme Helps The Fight Against Mesothelioma



Every year between 1994 and 2008, mesothelioma has caused the deaths of some 6,000 people around the world, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). It is also predicted that the rising number of asbestos-related fatalities – now over 92,000 (with two-thirds occurring after the year 2000) – could top 10 million in the next two decades.



In the UK, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) point to around 2,000 cases of mesothelioma diagnosed annually, and the number of mesothelioma deaths having risen by 3 per cent in just 12 months to 2,250 people in 2008. As a result, the number of asbestosis claim cases has more than doubled to 1,164 in 2010 and a further 45,000 deaths are expected by 2050.

The search for a cure to mesothelioma, the deadly malignant cancer of the lung or stomach lining caused by exposure to asbestos, continues. Organisations such as both the June Hancock and the Mick Knighton Mesothelioma Research Funds, and the various Asbestos Victim Support Groups of Greater Manchester, Cheshire and Derbyshire, to name just a few, are tireless in their dedication to helping mesothelioma victims, raising asbestos awareness and supporting research into finally overcoming the deadly disease.

In addition, organisations such as the National Asbestos Helpline (NAH), British Lung Foundation (BLF) and Mesothelioma UK are crucial in their work in bringing much needed help to mesothelioma victims around the country.

In August 2012, the Mesothelioma UK Charitable Trust announced that they had just received their very first donation from Elizabeth Reynolds who kindly donated her old car and raised £164.50 through the Give A Car Scheme, the not-for-profit social enterprise, which raises money for charity by accepting donations of old cars.

Launched in 2010, Give A Car supports over 800 charities around the UK, including those working with mesothelioma, cancer, children, animals, the elderly, disabled, the homeless and social welfare. To date, Give A Car has given £110,000 to Cancer Research UK and £21,000 to the Marie Curie Cancer Centre.

All vehicles, such as vans, motorbikes and lorries are accepted as well as cars, which are picked up within 1-3 days to be sent to scrap or auction, and all proceeds donated to a charity of the car donor’s choice.
